The Ospreys lost the final regular season game of the season 1-0 to Florida Gulf Coast University Saturday night at Hodges Stadium, but still managed to qualify for the ASUN Tournament.
For most of the night the two teams remained scoreless. Despite many shots by both squads, none reached the back of the net.
UNF (6-8-2 overall, 2-5-0 ASUN) subbed in players late in the half to give new energy, but the teams went into halftime tied at 0-0.
Out of the break, the Eagles (12-4- 1 overall, 6-0-1 ASUN) were aggressive on offensive. Within a span of about four minutes, they took five shots, none of which resulted in a goal.
At the 69th minute, Lauren Greene of FGCU hit a header to score the first and only goal of the night.
North Florida tried relentlessly to tie the score and force overtime, but time ran out on the Ospreys.
With the win, the Eagles remain unbeaten in conference, and are the ASUN regular season champions outright.
UNF clinched the sixth seed thanks to earlier wins over the NJIT Highlanders and USC Upstate Bison. The Highlanders and Bison didn’t make postseason play.
Head Coach Robin Confer spoke on the team going into the tournament.
“We’re excited, we feel like we just needed to get into the tournament,” Confer said. “We’ve been in every single conference game we’ve played this year. [In this] conference on any given day, anyone can beat anybody, it’s really competitive.”
The Ospreys face third seed Stetson in Deland on Oct. 29 in the quarterfinals.
