UNF’s Police Department continues to investigate a potential case of hazing, according to a police report obtained by the Spinnaker.

UNF’s Fraternity and Sorority Life received a letter May 17 concerning hazing in UNF’s Sigma Alpha sorority from the National Office of Delta Sigma Theta.

The Assistant Director of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life Laura Fox received the letter and contacted UPD to advise them of an alleged hazing incident, according to the police report.

The national office notified the university 11 members had been suspended for three years for the violations. In addition, the national Delta Sigma Theta fined each of the members $500.

Due to the on-going investigation on the reports, no comments could be made on the matter, Fox said.

University Police Department and Assistant Vice President for Public Relations Sharon Ashton also did not wish to comment.

Sigma Alpha could not be reached for comment, despite several attempts to contact them.

Hazing is defined by action that inflicts or intends to inflict harm or discomfort that may degrade any person, regardless of consent or location, according to UNF’s policies and procedures.

The prohibition against hazing, adopted by the policies and procedures in 2007, states that violating Florida laws and University policies in the form of hazing could result in termination of the chapter.

The Lambda Chi Alpha International Fraternity put UNF’s chapter on probation for hazing incidents in 2006, according to the Spinnaker archives. Later that year, UNF terminated the chapter and banned the members from joining other fraternities, attending Greek Life events and wearing Lambda Chi letters.
