North Florida men’s golfer MJ Maguire was named A-Sun Player of the Week on Wednesday after carding a career-low round of 64 (-7) and winning the individual title at the Irish Creek Collegiate last week with an overall score of 205 (73-64-68) – which is the UNF season-best.
Despite Maguire’s outstanding ball-striking, the Ospreys fell one stroke shy of a share for the team victory at the Irish Creek Collegiate, finishing in 2nd place with a tournament total of 860 (291-279-290). Georgia State won the tournament with an 859 (288-282-289) tournament total.
It’s Maguire’s second player of the week honor and first tournament win of the season, second of his career. “He’s been playing great all year,” Athletic Director Lee Moon said of Maguire’s play. “He’s led the team all year and as long as we remain competitive at the conference championship, we should get an at large bid to regionals. Hopefully we can get in.” Maguire’s previous individual title came in last season’s Atlantic Sun Championship when he shot a 1-under par total of 215 (75-72-68).
Named a third team All-American by Ping and Golfweek after last season, Maguire has continued to prove that he’s worthy of the recognition. He currently leads UNF with 12 rounds under par this season. The next best player for the Ospreys this season has six.
The Ospreys are two-time defending A-Sun champions and will look to defend their title at the upcoming A-Sun championship on April 20th-22nd at the difficult Legends Course in Braselton, Ga.
