UNF split their season opener weekend with a win and lost to wrap up their Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament.

The Ospreys held down the Campbell University Camels in a 2-0 victory on Aug. 25, the first day of the tournament.

North Florida played in front of a large crowd as they won the home opener at Hodges Stadium.

It’s always good to get a win on opening night on our home field,” said head coach Derek Marinatos.

It was senior midfielder Micah Smoak who broke the ice in the 69th minute and scored the first goal of the night for UNF.

The Ospreys kept the good energy and grabbed the second goal of the night six minutes later.

It all happened in the 75th minute when freshman Blake Sams sent the ball toward the goal where it found sophomore forward Adrian Nunez who kicked it into the net.

“Goals change games and we put the first one in which changed how we were playing, then put a second one in and almost had a third,” said Marinatos.

Senior goalkeeper Tord Pedersen had a good night and grabbed four saves for the Ospreys at the net.

Coming off the season opener victory, North Florida faced the University of North Carolina Wilmington Seahawks at Hodges Stadium on Aug.27.

The Ospreys tried to make a late comeback against the Seahawks but fell short of a win as they were defeated 3-2.

The Seahawks scored the first three goals of the night during the 38th, 61st and 64th minute of the game.

Hoping to stay alive, the Ospreys scrabbled for goals and grabbed two behind Nunez.

His first goal was scored in the 86th minute and assisted by Collin Scott. Three minutes later, Nunez had a free kick for the UNF’s second goal.

The Ospreys play at home again as they battle Georgia Southern University on Sept. 1 at 8 p.m.
