The University of North Florida men’s basketball team won its second early-season tournament championship in as many years Wednesday night, as they beat Morgan State 59-52 to win the Cancun Challenge.
The Ospreys were led by three players who scored in double digits. Junior Matt Sauey, and sophomores Andy Diaz and Parker Smith, all scored 11 points to lead the Ospreys.
Sophomore Jerron Granberry, who scored eight points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists in the championship game, was named Tournament MVP, while junior transfer Jimmy Williams chipped in nine on his way to earning All-Tournament honors.
While it was their hot shooting that got the Ospreys in to the championship game, it was their defense that won it for them. The Ospreys held the Bears to a slim 32 percent (20-62) shooting. The Bears struggled even worse from long range, missing 10-of-11 three pointers.
The Ospreys are now done with their six-game road schedule to open the season and now are set to play their first home game of the regular season on Dec. 2, against Florida Gulf Coast inside the UNF Arena. The game will kick off conference play for the Ospreys who are aiming for an Atlantic Sun Title.
