Parking Services is renovating parking lots 1 and 2 to increase the number of parking spaces and make parking safer for students with disabilities, Director of Business and Parking Services George Androuin said.
Androuin said the disability parking spaces will be increased from five to 12 spaces in Lot 2, between the library and the Fine Arts Garage.
The new spaces will also be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Androuin said.
Lot 1, in front of the Arts Garage, will go from 48 premium spots to 56 premium spots and is now complete except for the final paint stripes, which will be done Sept. 27, Androuin said.
Androuin said the project costs $144,714 and is being paid for by the parking services budget according to scheduled renovations.
Androuin said the expected completion date is around Oct. 12, excepting rain delays.
Economics Major Brooke Jennrich said the expansion is a good idea because it makes it easier for students with disabilities and it opens up parking for other students in Lot 1.
Philosophy Junior Tyler Redshaw said it was a positive expansion but he was skeptical about the university’s decision of what expenses are necessary.
