The UNF men’s basketball team defeated conference foe Belmont with an at the buzzer tip-in by Matt Sauey off Brad Haugabrook miss.
Miss is something the Ospreys did a lot of Thursday night, shooting less than 30 percent for the game.
“Defense wins games, defense wins championships,” said head coach Matt Driscoll, after the game.
During the first half, the Ospreys shot at about 24 percent. Driscoll said he told the team he needed them to make shots.
But in the second half, UNF barely improved to just 26 percent.
Also in the 2nd half, Haugabrook fell to the court with cramping issues.
“We probably used him too much at practice [Wednesday],” Driscoll said.
A win is a win and the Ospreys have improved to 9-8, (4-3 A-Sun)—a winning record.
This was the first time the men’s basketball team has ever beaten Belmont snapping an 0-7 streak.
But worth noting, with every step UNF is taking JU steps too, The Dolphins are tied at 4-3 with UNF in the A-Sun, and they defeated conference leader Lipscoomb Thursday night.
The Ospreys will host Lipscomb Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. before traveling to play Jacksonville University at Swisher Gymnasium. Tickets are sold out, but many UNF students are meeting up at the Boathouse Monday night where there will be a watch party.
