Campus is heating up as heat indexes are forecasted to exceed 100 degrees this weekend and beyond.
With events coming up this weekend such as the Pokemon Go Tournament and the release of a new Harry Potter story, it’s important to take precautions when you’re going to be outside.
The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have created a Heat Safety Tool that you can download on you smartphone. The app uses the phone’s GPS to assess the heat risk in the area. It also provides users with a list of protective measures such as drinking plenty of fluids and how to watch for heat-related illness.
When walking through campus or attending local outdoor activities around UNF, students should be aware of the temperature as well as their exposure to the heat. Be aware of any dizziness or nausea, as this may be a sign of heat exhaustion. More information about signs and ways to avoid heat-related illness can be found at the National Weather Service website.
