Entering Memorial Day weekend with a wildfire close to home

Victoria Reed

The high temperatures expected throughout Memorial Day weekend, the lack of rain and low humidity creates a recipe for potential wildfires throughout the weekend.

There are presently 27 active wildfires in Florida statewide with one located in Duval County.

An active wildfire is currently at U.S. 17 and Yellow Bluff Road. The fire is 25% contained, said the Florida Forest Service.

According to FFS, “north and south edges are in the marsh and inaccessible to equipment. Helicopter will be dropping water again today and heavy dozer will improve lines along 17 – light smoke on I-95.”

Officials are investigating what started the wildfire.

Jacksonville temperatures are expected to be in the upper 90s during the weekend. Potential wildfire starters to keep in mind are fireworks, camping, cook-outs and cigarettes.
