UNF professor Dr. Arturo Sanchez-Ruiz remains in jail on charges of sexual battery with a female minor, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Ruiz is charged with two counts of sexual battery, and Judge Elizabeth A. Senterfitt has refused to set a bond since Sanchez-Ruiz was arrested May 20, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Ruiz will remain in jail until his bond is released or until the trial is over. Sanchez-Ruiz’s next court date is 9 a.m. Monday (Oct. 17), and the judge may make a ruling regarding the bond then.
Judge Senterfitt was not available Friday afternoon to comment on why she has not set a bond yet.
Ruiz is a computer science professor who makes $89,547 for nine months of work, as of Nov. 8, 2010 figures.
Attorney Richard Selinger told the Spinnaker for a Sept. 14 article that his client, Sanchez-Ruiz, is not guilty of the charges and that the charges would be dropped when they returned to court Oct. 10.
In that same article, Marc Snow, who is in UNF’s Office of General Counsel, said the university knew of the arrest immediately but did not make an effort to publicize it, considering its sensitivity and severity.
As Snow told the Spinnaker, “If he is found guilty, it is very unlikely he would be able to return here based upon the charges that are filed against him.”
