Freshmen will live in the Cove instead of the Fountains this summer because a large portion of the Fountains will be closed for maintenance.
Bob Boyle, director of Housing and Residence Life, said 200-300 upperclassmen will occupy three floors of the Fountain’s north tower over summer while the rest of the dorms receive routine cleaning and maintenance. Boyle said the part of the Fountains normally housing summer term students will be closed from April 25 through May 11 because the Fountains needs to be emptied for staff to complete the building’s cleaning and maintenance.
About 50 intersession students will live in the Hall.
Boyle said students will be staying there because staff can clean and prepare the Hall quickly since the rooms are smaller and the bathrooms and community areas are already cleaned daily. Additionally, Boyle noted that the Fountains’s welcome desk will remain open so students can call when the housing office is closed if they need any help.
He said most students participating in summer intersession do not live in the Fountains, but some do.
Students living in the Fountains that are participating in intersession will have to check out of the Fountains, move everything out of their dorm, and then move back into the Fountains if they are returning for Summer A, he said.
“It’s not convenient for everybody, but unfortunately, we just have to make some of those bigger decisions,” he said. “I can definitely see where some students believe it would be more convenient for…them to stay right where they are and live it out.”
He said from a safety standpoint he doesn’t want students spread out throughout the Fountains and not have staff living there.
