We are always searching for the best new fashion, new workouts and new haircuts.  The pursuit of originality is at an all-time high, and for those of you who crave the latest and greatest, I’ve got something you want: new tunes.

Cheezy T, a local band comprised of three UNF students, is fairly new to the scene but has already generated a large following of eardrums. It’s not a hard statement to believe after listening to them play.  A combination of whimsical guitar solos and funkalicious drum beats makes sliding their sound into one single genre nearly impossible.

Some tunes will get you shaking your hips and tapping your feet, while others ooze over closed eyelids, cradling your swaying body as you drift into a world of hypnotic sounds.

One of the most intriguing things about Cheezy T is that almost all of their songs played live are made up on the spot.

“I call it instantaneous creativity,” said Matt Bourgois, health administration senior and bass player for the band. “We like to see what our minds can produce on the spur of the moment.”

It’s not every day a band gets on stage and plays songs they haven’t practiced, let alone written.

“It helps that we were all friends before starting the band,” said Ryan Tinney, an electronic media junior and drummer for Cheezy T. “It really makes it easier to vibe off each other, since that’s really important when no one knows exactly what they’re going to play.”

Joining Bourgois and Tinney in this eclectic group of artists is Scott Bell, also an electronic media senior and the electric guitarist for the band.

Bell has been playing guitar for 12 years and has been casually playing music with Tinney for three years.

Although they don’t have a large repertoire of standard songs, the three melody-makers do spend a lot of time jamming together, coming up with riffs or chords they can build off of for live shows.

“We stray off even on songs that we have a set tune for,” Bell said. “But we do have some songs that are played the exactly same way at each show.”

Cheezy T prides itself on its music-making twist and don’t feel any pressure due to their carefree strategy.

“If we ever mess up or get off-key for a little, we just keep going and pretend that we meant to do it,” Bourgois said.

It’s a simple process but one that takes time and patience, especially if they discover a tune they all enjoy.

“We will practice for hours and only come up with one song,” Bourgois said. “We just jam, and if we find a riff we really like, we stop and try to remember how we just played it, so we can play it again live.”

Cheezy T has managed to mesh all types of genres together into their music by adding their personal influences into the music. While bands such as Pink Floyd and Minus the Bear inspire Tinney’s drum beats, John Frusciante and Metallica inspire Bell’s guitar blasts.

“When people ask us what kind of music we play, I never know what to say,” Bourgois said. “We are everything combined.”

Cheezy T has enough funky riffs and boogieing beats to get everyone in the room on their feet and grooving. Their all-encompassing approach has gained interest from a wide audience.

Since their initial collaboration back in April of this year, the boys have come a long way from jam sessions at friend’s houses and open mic nights. They recently have been playing at venues such as Mellow Mushroom, Bravo Burrito and the Sinclair Jacksonville.  Although they do hope to one day be able to play at a music festival, their real motivation comes from the crowd.

“I don’t even care if we get paid,” Bourgois said. “All I want is to look out at a ton of people who are smiling and dancing and having a great time enjoying the music we’ve created.”
