The University of North Florida and members of the Gandhi Memorial Society put on a celebration in Peace Plaza to remember and celebrate Gandhi’s birthday on Saturday, Oct. 4.

Members in attendance spent their time listening to musical and vocal recitals, speeches from Gandhi Memorial Society scholarship recipients and garlanding the statue.

“We are proud to have the Gandhi statue be such a symbol of peace here at UNF,” Senior Director of the Women’s Center Sheila Spivey said. “And it has created a peace plaza with Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King at the other end.

Gandhi’s birthday is Oct. 2 and it is commemorated in India as a national holiday.
