Three years ago, a bright young student was killed in a plane crash during Winter Break. Now the family of Maitland Harvey will be recognized during the Commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 7.

Maitland Harvey

Harvey was a UNF student and a sister of Alpha Chi Omega before she was killed in a plane crash in December 2015. She was 18-years-old.

Harvey was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she lived with her family until they moved to Orlando in 2008. She attended The First Academy private school for four years and started attending the University of North Florida in summer 2015 after she was smitten with the beauty of the campus on a campus tour.

When she wasn’t finding a coffee shop or doing what “teens do,” as her mother said, she also enjoyed photography, which started in high school. She used to keep antique cameras in her room and was happy when she saved enough money to purchase her own Nikon camera. She enjoyed taking photos of nature, like sunrises over the coast.

Harvey describes her dream to travel in her final blog entry.

“I have no clue what I’m getting myself into but I’ve got a good feeling about it. All I know is that being in the sky is one of the coolest thing[s] experienceable on this earth.”
