One of the most unique aspects of UNF is its diverse range of wildlife. One of the most elusive and dangerous creatures that inhabit our campus is the Raccoon. 

Procyon Lotor, or commonly referred to as “Raccoon,” are a species of omnivorous, usually nocturnal mammals found all over North America. They are primarily scavengers, and can often be found raiding trash cans and abandoned food. 

While they may not look too harmful, Raccoons can be very aggressive. They are also frequent carriers of Rabies, among other possible diseases. For safety reasons, you should not attempt to feed, pet or come anywhere near a raccoon. If one crosses your path, just slowly walk away, but be ready to run in case it follows or chases you. 

If you are scratched or bitten by a raccoon, seek immediate medical attention. Stay safe out there, Ospreys!
