Men’s and women’s tennis claimed victories and suffered defeat on the road and at home.
After the UNF women’s tennis team grabbed the doubles point, the Ospreys fell to the USF Bulls in the singles matches with a final score of 4-3 on Mar. 4.
“It was another match that we were in the right position again and then didn’t finish,” said head coach Mariana Cobra.
The Ospreys were off to a good start and were able to take the doubles win with a victory in the No. 1 and No. 3 spot.
After losing their momentum that got the Ospreys the doubles win, said Cobra, the Ospreys let the singles points slip away.
Sophomore Rafaela Gomez’s five match win streak would be snapped against the Bull’s junior Juliana Cardoso in a 6-4 defeat in the first set and a 7-5 defeat in the second set. Gomez has not lost a singles match since Jan. 24.
Only two Ospreys would be able to grab a win in the singles matches, senior Quetzali Vazquez and Luise Intert, who are the doubles pair who won the doubles match earlier that day. Vazquez and Intert both increased their singles win streak to three matches.
The Bulls took four of the six singles matches to defeat the Ospreys with the final score of 4-3.
On Mar.6, the Ospreys fell 5-2 to Furman at the UNF tennis complex. Similar to their Saturday’s loss, North Florida fought in the singles matches but was unable to claim the victory. Kinga Gartner and Rafaela Gomez were the only Ospreys to grab points in the meeting. No points were claimed in the doubles play.
Next they will host Savannah State and James Madison on Mar. 9 with the first match at 9 a.m.
The Ospreys men’s tennis team clinched their 11th straight doubles point win in a 4-2 defeat against former
ASUN rival East Tennessee State Buccaneers on Mar. 3.
The Ospreys switched from their comfortable outdoor home setting for the Bristol Indoor Courts in Johnson City, Tenn. when facing the Buccaneers.
While their setting may have changed the Ospreys stayed on their A-game. Head coach Mark Finnegan said, “We did a great job of sticking to our game and playing really aggressive.”
The Ospreys would prove this in both their singles and doubles matches.
Continuing their dominating performance, sophomore doubles duo Sahil Deshmukh and Jonathan Deautriell brought in their eighth straight doubles win in the No. 3 spot. In the No. 2 doubles spot senior Yannick Zuern and junior Lasse Muscheites clinched a win and grabbed the doubles point for the Ospreys.
Moving on to the singles, several Ospreys had outstanding performances against the Buccaneers. Deshmukh continued his win streak from the doubles matches into the singles matches.
Deshmukh moved his singles match win streak to five matches after taking down the Buccaneers Miguel Este in the first two sets.
Junior Lasse Muscheites continued his singles win streak in Johnson City after a close match against David Gonzalez. Muscheites won his first set against Gonzalez with a score of 6-3, but Gonzalez would not go down without a fight. In the second set, Gonzalez would make an epic comeback to win the set 6-1. The match would be pushed to a third set where Muscheites would win 6-3.
The Ospreys then traveled to Elon, N.C. to take on Elon University’s Phoenixes.
The UNF men’s tennis team extended their doubles match win streak to 12 and have several outstanding performances in a 6-1 win over Elon.
It was victories in the No.1 and No. 2 that clinched the doubles win for the Ospreys. In the No. 1 doubles spot senior Jack Findel-Hawkins and junior Jefta Kecic defeated Elon’s Petar Tomic and Chris Humphreys in a 6-3 match. Senior Yannick Zuern and junior Lasse Muscheites did not even let Elon score in the match. Zuern and Muscheites swept Taylor Foote and Felipe Sarrasague 6-0 on Elon’s home court clinching the doubles point.
Jefta Kecic, nationally-ranked at 108, won his second straight singles match at the No. 2 spot.
Sahil Deshmukh continued his singles match win streak against Elon as he defeated Elon’s Louis Rico 6-2 in the first and second set. Deshmukh now leads the team in singles win streak as he extends his streak to five matches.
After a 6-0 win in the doubles match junior Lasse Muscheites extended his singles win streak to five matches after taking down Elon’s Felipe Osses-Konig in two sets.
UNF would go on to win five of the six singles matches to win the game 6-1. The Ospreys record now stands at 7-5 as they move south to battle nationally-ranked No. 40 team USF on Mar. 15.
