A vegan guide to fast food

Heydi Ortiz, Managing Editor

If you’re vegan, or have dairy or gluten intolerances, then you know that finding a fast food place you can eat at is a bit of a struggle. But there’s more the world of fast food has to offer than just animal products and by-products. When looking at fast food restaurants with vegan options, the easiest thing to focus on is going to places that are more than happy to modify your meals.

Here’s a list of places you can eat at when you’re in need of something fast:

  • Panera

Panera offers a great variety of options for vegans including the Vegan Soba Noodle Broth Bowl with Edamame Blend. Choose from Black Pepper or Sea Salt Focaccia, Country Rustic, Farmstyle, Artisan Ciabatta, Sourdough or French Baguette breads for your sandwiches. The Mediterranean Veggie sandwich is a great option with the exemption of feta (make sure to switch out the bread). Any of the salads can also be customized to your liking.

If you’re gluten intolerant, checkout one of the new grain bowls they have.

  • Burger King

This year, Burger King released a new plant-based burger called the Impossible Whopper and many say it’s worth the try. Pair that with the fries and you’re good to go. If you’re feeling dessert then try the Dutch Apple Pie.

  • Taco bell

Taco Bell is definitely a great place for vegans to eat. Items like the 7 Layer Bean Burrito, Black Bean Burrito, and even the Crunchwrap Supreme can be made vegan if you withhold the cheese, meat or sour cream. If you have a sweet tooth then try the cinnamon twists.

  • Starbucks

We know Starbucks is vegan-friendly with their nut milk substitutes for drinks but did you also know that you can order the Lentils & Vegetable Protein Bowl with brown rice? Also, know that their chocolate syrup is vegan. Mocha away!

  • Subway

Subway has a variety of vegan breads including Roasted Garlic bread. A lot of people order the Veggie Delight without cheese or mayo.

  • Chipotle

If you want something with a pack of flavor then Chipotle is the way to go. Order a burrito, a bowl, a taco or a salad with Sofritas– a tofu base with peppers and seasonings. Beware of the spice.

  • Noodles & Company

If you’re in the mood for some quick pasta, Noodles & Company serves up a great variety of pasta dishes for vegans. Japanese Pan Noodles, Thai Green Curry (without shrimp) and Spaghetti Marinara are just some of the options you can choose from. A lot of the dishes can be made vegan with modifications.

  • Blaze Pizza

Blaze Pizza is a great way to satisfy your pizza cravings, Daiya cheese and all. They have a variety of veggies to go on your pizza and even vegan spicy chorizo.

  • BurgerFi

Wanting a juicy burger without the meat? Well, BurgerFi has it. The Vegan Beyond Burger consists of a 100 percent plant-based Beyond burger patty and comes on a vegan multigrain bun. Yum.

  • Pita Pit

Thankfully, we have one of these on campus and if you’re looking for a midnight “snack” then maybe head over to Pita Pit where you can get yourself a flavorful falafel pita, a garden pita, a spicy black bean pita or a hummus pita.
