Senior Michelle Valdez was determined to leave Fort Myers with the ASUN title. The senior took home MVP honors and won the final match giving UNF the point and the three-peat.
The women’s tennis team fought off a 3-0 deficit to beat no. 1 seeded FGCU in the ASUN Championship 4-3 in a series that came down to the wire.
The women’s tennis team has now won the ASUN Championship three times in a row with all victories coming over the Eagles.
Valdez was named the championship MVP thanks to her three-set match victory. Valdez and two other Ospreys, Luise Intert and Quetzali Vazquez, were also named to the ASUN All-Tournament Team for their stellar play this season.
FGCU came out relentless against their in-state rival. The Eagles got the double point after they secured the one and three positions. Being down 3-0 was not easy to recover from.
Vazquez won her singles set point to start the comeback. Then junior Irina Karangozishvili won her match bringing the Ospreys within striking distance of the Eagles at 3-2.
An FGCU player was injured during a singles match and was unable to continue playing. This gave North Florida another point knotting the score at 3 all. In her last match as an Osprey, Valdez delivered the winning match point to secure the Osprey’s third straight title.
The Women’s NCAA tournament runs from May 18-29 at the University of Georgia.
