UNF Baseball loses first two games to Highlanders

North Florida (24-26) was swept by NJIT (22-22) in the doubleheader on Thursday, May 17, 3-1 in the first game and 7-1 in the second.

In game one, the Highlanders struck early in the second inning by taking a three-run lead. UNF countered in the third inning with back-to-back singles from Chris Matthias and Abraham Sequera. Dalton Board capitalized with a single up the middle to score Matthias, making the score 3-1 Highlanders.

In game two, NJIT scored early in the second with a pair of runs to take a two-run lead. The Highlanders added some insurance runs in the third inning to extend the lead to 4-0. Blake Voyles jump-started the offense in the sixth inning with an RBI single to make it 4-1 Highlanders. Throughout the sixth, seventh and eighth inning, NJIT added on three runs to win 7-1.

Some players that stood out in this doubleheader for the Ospreys were Frank German, Blake Voyles and Mac Wilson. German’s six punch-outs during his start in game one bumped him up to third in the ASUN in strikeouts with 98. Voyles had a day at the plate going five-for-eight in the doubleheader with a base knock in game two. Wilson collected four hits in the doubleheader and extended his games reached on-base streak to 11.

The Ospreys look to avoid the sweep when they play the Highlanders this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Jim Hynes Stadium in Union, New Jersey.
