The Ospreys swept the Wildcats in three straight sets

The Ospreys Volleyball team finished the non-conference portion of the season strong as they swept the Bethune Cookman Wildcats in three straight sets on Tuesday, Sep. 18.

The Ospreys dominated in the first set as they won 25-14. Bethune Cookman was continuously playing a game of catch-up throughout the set but ultimately couldn’t deliver. The spotlight player of the set was Senior Alana Shoff as she led the attack with six kills.

The Ospreys continued to ride the wave of momentum toward victory as they defeated the Wildcats, 25-21 in the second set. Redshirt-Sophomore Gabby O’Connell and Junior Taryn Griffey recorded a combined 11 kills in the second set.

The third set was the biggest battle between the Ospreys and Wildcats, as BCU attempted a comeback late in the set but couldn’t finish strong. The Ospreys won 25-21 in the third set, cementing a clean sweep over the Wildcats.  O’Connell and Sophomore Devyn Wheeler each hammered out seven kills.

“Attitude is everything. When you’re one hundred percent committed, this team can play with anyone,” Coach Wright said.

Some standout players throughout the match were Wheeler with 11 kills, O’Connell with her seventh double-double of the season (15 kills and 10 digs), and Senior Madilyn McCarty who set up 40 assists. This was the thirteenth time this season that McCarty has set up at least 20 assists in a match.

With conference play coming up, McCarty talked to Spinnaker about what she is excited for.

“I think that we’re kind of overlooked this year, and we’ve been putting in so much work this preseason and have a played a lot of good schools. I think we’re going to do very well,” McCarty said.

The Ospreys have their first conference matchup with Liberty at home on Friday, Sep. 21 at 6 p.m.
