When Rhetta Moore walked onto the UNF Women’s Basketball team her freshman year, she never thought that she would be awarded a scholarship two years later.

Moore came to UNF not only wanting to play basketball but also do well in school. As a walk on, Moore felt that she had something to prove. She wanted to do her best and help her team in any way that she could. Moore admits that she was not always the star of the show her freshman and sophomore year, however, she did little things that mattered over time.

“I think from freshman year to sophomore year to now, I’ve tried to always come in with a positive attitude and really be encouraging to the team and just always give best effort,” Moore said.

Throughout her three years at UNF, Moore has immensely developed as a player, according to UNF Women’s Basketball Head Coach Darrick Gibbs.

“It’s all the intangible things that she brings. Obviously, Rhetta is here practicing and working out with the girls and doing everything that they’re doing but it is the person that she is,” Gibbs said.  “We talk a lot about culture and about bringing in the right pieces that are the type of people we want to represent this program, to represent the university, and to represent us. I think that Rhetta represents that to a tee,”.

Moore has become an integral part of the UNF Women’s Basketball team. Coach Gibbs explained why he felt that now was the right time to award the junior from Charleston with this scholarship.

“The opportunity presented itself, one, and two, looking at what she has done and her body of work. We looked at what Rhetta has contributed to this program and what she is going to continue to do and we felt it was necessary and great time to offer her a scholarship,” Coach Gibbs said.

Moore discussed how much earning the scholarship meant to her.

“This scholarship means so much because it really just shows that hard work can pay off. I am very grateful and appreciative to have received it and I am just excited to see what the future holds,” Moore said.

The UNF Women’s Basketball season kicks off in Madison, Wisconsin on Tuesday, November 5 at 7 p.m.
